BRTC Foundation Announces William “Bill” Bean Memorial Welding Scholarship

Black River Technical College Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the William “Bill” Bean Memorial Welding Scholarship at Black River Technical College (BRTC). The scholarship honors Bill Bean, a former BRTC welding student, and will support students in the college’s welding program.

The scholarship was established with a $10,000 gift. The amount awarded will be based on student need. In collaboration with BRTC’s welding instructors, the scholarship will first help recipients cover the books, supplies, and materials required for the welding program. It may then help counter tuition and fees for students who have financial need and are not eligible for other funding. Recipients must be enrolled in the welding program and may be full- or part-time students.

Bean, of Imboden, attended BRTC as a welding student from 1995-1996. Those who knew him described him as an extremely intelligent man who could build and repair almost anything. He was a man of faith who dedicated his life to the Lord through baptism six years ago. He is remembered by his family and friends, many of whom cared for him in his final days. Bean passed on June 20, 2026, at the age of 67.

The scholarship reflects Bean’s hard-tech skills and abilities, and it will help ensure that cost is not a barrier for students learning the welding trade at BRTC.

The BRTC Foundation exists solely to provide resources to further the academic programs and activities of BRTC. The Foundation’s mission is to assist with the development and enhancement of programs and facilities; to assist in providing broader educational opportunities and services to students, staff, and alumni; and to receive, hold, and administer gifts or grants.
