Phi Theta Kappa

The Four Hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa are Scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.

The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize and encourage scholarship among associate degree students.  To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa provides opportunities for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate to exchange ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.

Phi Theta Kappa has been recognizing academic achievement in two-year colleges since 1918.  Phi Theta Kappa has chartered 1,100 chapters, and inducted it's one-millionth member in 1993.  Phi Theta Kappa chapters are located on campuses in all fifty of the United States, Canada, U.S. Territorial possessions and military installations abroad.  It is the only international acclaimed honor society serving institutions which offer associate degree programs.  Two-year college presidents and administrators of associate degree programs in four-year schools have continually recognized membership in Phi Theta Kappa as an honor and privilege.  Membership is given added significance by the fact that the society is recognized by the American Association of Community colleges as the official general honor society for two-year colleges.

Phi Theta Kappa members come from different backgrounds.  Some were in the top ranks of their high school graduating classes; others were once dropouts.  Many are re-entry students who are getting a second chance at education, some are attending college for the first time.  Some plan an academic career that will include graduate school; others will end their formal education at the two-year college level.

Each semester invitation to membership is extended by the chapter to BRTC students who have completed at least 12 hours of applicable course work with a GPA of 3.5.
