The Black River Technical College Aviation Maintenance Technician program is offered under the approval and accreditation of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The two-year certificate program is divided into General, Airframe, and Powerplant curriculum. The student is required to complete the General course in order to obtain a certificate in the Airframe and/or Powerplant course. A minimum of 50% of the total time is spent in laboratory/shop instruction.

Upon successful completion of the program, the student may be certified by the FAA as an Airframe and Powerplant mechanic and is expected to acquire hand tools.

The combination Airframe and Powerplant mechanic can perform scheduled maintenance and repairs on aircraft as well as complete inspections required by the FAA.

The Airframe and Powerplant program is designed to provide 1900 hours of actual class time and provides training with the tools and equipment needed for proper instruction. Students will become familiar with turbine and reciprocating engines, used in aircraft, and airframe sheetmetal repairs.

Career Opportunities

Aircraft mechanics must do careful and thorough work that requires a high degree of mechanical aptitude. Employers seek applicants who are self-motivated, hard-working, enthusiastic, and able to diagnose and solve complex mechanical problems. Most employers consider graduates of post-secondary programs who have normal training to be the most desirable applicants.

Employers realize that individuals who have completed the aviation maintenance technology program have received the most up-to-date training possible in turbine engines, aviation electronics, and composite materials -including graphite, fiberglass, and kevlar - all of which are increasingly being used in the construction of new aircraft.
