With the rapid changes in technology within the auto industry, the auto technician must not only be familiar with the equipment, but also will need to develop skills to accurately and quickly diagnose problems.
Automotive technology is rapidly increasing in sophistication and most training authorities strongly recommend that the individuals seeking automotive technician jobs complete a formal training program after graduating from high school. Automotive training in a post-secondary program provides more thorough career preparation than high school programs and enhances the individual's opportunity for employment in this field.
The Automotive Service Technology program is a two-year Master Technician Certificate program, but is offered as 2 one-year speciality certificates. The Electrical-Engine Speciality Certificate and the Powertrain Systems Speciality Certificate will be combined with Introduction to Computer Concepts for the Master Technician Certificate.
Students enrolled in the Automotive Service Technology program at BRTC will have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art equipment to inspect and diagnose engines and other components, as well as, become familiar with computerized diagnostic tools. Upon completion of the program, students will have skills that are necessary for most employment sites, as well as a strong foundation to build upon should the student consider a specialty. Career specialization options for a student are drivability, air conditioning, front-end, brake, and transmission. Students who successfully complete the Automotive Service Technician program will qualify for certification by Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the two-year Automotive Service Technology program possess skills, which are in great demand in the automobile service and repair industry.
The field of employment for automotive technicians is expected to increase for several years, primarily due to the increasing number of automobiles in our society.
