The Fire Science program at BRTC offers courses for upgrading career skills and enhancing the firefighter's eligibility for promotions. The program also prepares students for careers in firefighting and in private industry in various fire protection areas, and introduces a variety of fire protection- related career opportunities.

This program utilizes National Fire Academy and Arkansas Fire Academy courses, as well as courses developed by the Black River Technical College Fire Training Center.

This program is a career-laddering process with the first year graduate receiving a one-year certificate. The graduate of the one-year program should be prepared to enter the fire service field at an entry firefighter level, having met the qualifications of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1023 and 2013 Level I and II (Firefighter) and NFPA 1021 Level I (Fire Officer).

Through classroom and laboratory exercises, the student is introduced to various fire service hazards, fire prevention problems, fire suppression problems, hazardous materials, and fire service administrative problems. The student is taught numerous skills which include figuring pump hydraulics, investigation arson scenes, firefighting strategies, instruction of other fire fighters, fire inspections, and emergency medical care. A part of the instruction takes place at area fire departments on a flexible schedule using nights and weekends to allow maximum participation.

The curriculum in the Associate of Applied Science in Fire Science program is designed to enable individuals to draw on technical and professional knowledge in making effective decisions concerning fire science. Through technical education, the individual acquires specialized knowledge in this field of public service and develops specific competencies for the performance of fire service administrative and supervisory duties. The graduate of the Associate of Applied Science in Fire Science meet the qualifications of NFPA 1021 Level II (Fire Officer).

Career Opportunities

The Fire Science Program is designed to provide students with the knowledge of modern municipal and rural fire protection and the skills necessary to apply that knowledge effectively on the job.

Graduates will find opportunities not only as firefighters in municipal fire departments, but in private industry as well. Employment possibilities also exist with insurance companies, industrial safety organizations, and federal, state, and county government.

Fire fighting is a popular career choice, which creates competition for the existing positions. However, fire protection is an essential service and citizens often exert considerable pressure on local officials to expand the level of fire protection.
