The Nursing Assistant program at Black River Technical College is a four-week course and is approved by the Department of Human Services, Office of Long-term Care.

This program combines classroom instruction with clinical training. Successful completion of the program will prepare the student for the state certification exam required for Nursing Assistant certification. Students can apply for employment in hospitals, nursing homes, or as a home health nursing assistant.

The health care field is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations in response to an emphasis on rehabilitation and the long-term care needs of a rapidly aging population. Nursing assistants are expected to be a vital part of this growth.

Nursing Assistants help care for the physically or mentally ill, injured, disabled, or infirmed individuals confined to hospitals, nursing homes or residential care facilities, and mental health settings. Nursing Assistants perform routine tasks under the supervision of Nursing and Medical Staff.

Career Opportunities

Employers prefer individuals who have completed formal training in this health occupation field. Individuals who complete the program and pass the state certification exam are placed on the state registry of nursing assistants. This occupation can offer individuals entry into the world of work within the health profession.

Applicants for this program should be healthy, trustworthy, patient, understanding, emotionally stable, dependable, and have a desire to help people. Experiences as a nursing assistant can also help individuals decide whether to further pursue a career in the health care field.

Students are required to purchase liability insurance upon admission into the program. This is available through a group policy.

THIS PROGRAM IS INELIGIBLE FOR FINANCIAL AID.
